Lesson 2: 🎹 Exercise 1 - Root Position Major Triad

Voice Leading Exercise (Root Position)

Beginner students usually understand chords in root position (1, 3, 5) but it's important for you to get used to playing inversions as they are the foundation of getting a pro sound. Inversions help create smooth transitions (voice leading) in the melody.

In this exercise we will play a 1-4-5 chord progression in the key of F major and the chords are F, Bb and C major. Below are examples of how to play this progression smoothly when the first chord is in root position. Once you've played it in F major, try this chord progression in as many keys as possible.

F Major (Root)

Bb Major (2nd Inversion)

C Major (2nd Inversion)
